Photo Fest @ LBCC 2009

2nd ANNUAL PHOTOGRAPHY FESTIVAL AT LONG BEACH CITY COLLEGE

Fresh off of the success of our first PhotoFest last spring, the Photography Department at Long Beach City College will be hosting PhotoFest 09 @ LBCC on April 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th. 2009. The 2nd annual PhotoFest@LBCC will be held in Long Beach, California with 4 days of free photography-related events and celebrations. The festival will bring together a wide array of accomplished photographers from Southern California and will showcase the work of renowned photographic artists and photojournalists. Our goal is to celebrate photography and it’s impact on our world.

The main emphasis of the festival will be the workshops, demonstrations and seminars held over the four-day period. These events are free, open to students and the general public as well, and are suitable for all levels of expertise. The festival will feature a Photography contest that is open to all LBCC students as well as a “juniors” section for high school students. The Friday evening exhibition and reception will showcase work from the LBCC photography program as well as reveal the photography contest winners.

Dates and Locations
Festival Seminars will be held at the Pacific Coast Campus Photography facility of Long Beach City College from Wednesday April 1st to Saturday April 4th, 2009. The campus is located at 1305 E. Pacific Coast Hwy in Long Beach, CA.

Come on and join us anytime between 10am and 2pm for a convention-style presentation by local camera stores, photographic related companies and photo schools. Participants include Freestyle Photo, Calumet Camera, Samy’s Camera, Tuttle Cameras, Bill’s Camera, Julia Dean Photographic Workshops, Urban Photo Adventures, PCL West Imaging, Epson Printers, ASMP Los Angeles and Art Center College of Design.

The New Age of Discovery. A tour of black and white paper from around the world. presented by Eric Joseph
This informative and educational seminar/workshop will explore the new papers that have come into the United States in black and white darkroom photography over the past several years. The first hour we'll tour around the world and show you the manufacturer's operations and give a brief history of each. Then, the remainder of the time will be spent in the darkroom printing on each of these papers. You will learn and print on papers from manufacturers such as Foma, Slavich, Adox, and Fotokemika. As an added bonus, Freestyle Advisory Board Member Marc Valesella with demonstrate how to get the most from modern B&W film emulsions with his specially custom built high definition enlarger. Limited enrollment.

What is a Holga? Or a Lomo? My cool new camera cost three thousand bucks and look at the size of the glass on it! Why would I want to shoot with a thirty dollar plastic camera with a plastic lens and light leaks? Toy camera photography is becoming very popular and allows the photographer full creative freedom without being constrained by photo gear.

A hands-on workshop sponsored by Freestyle Photographic. What if we overexpose a piece of B&W photo paper in the darkroom, then develop it in a very dilute developer - for a long time? If we do it right we'll end up with a grainy print with dark shadows and delicate highlights, a beautiful, one-of-a-kind piece of art! Learn Lith Printing, a wonderful and fascinating alternative darkroom technique from Master Printmaker Gene Nocon.

Conceptual Documentary a presentation by Tommi Cahill
This workshop focuses on idea-based art within the vein of the documentary genre. Topics will include: how to create/conceptualize a body of work through your own experiences or interests, how to "fit in" making work on a busy schedule, an aesthetics!

Digital Workflow a presentation by Barry Schwartz, president ASMP Los Angeles
Need a primer on just what to do after you clicked the button on your new digital SLR? This seminar will cover digital workflow. From downloading the files, looking at the metadata and RAW files, to the basics of Adobe Lightroom and Bridge, and finally file naming conventions and backup.

Applying for Grants and Submitting Portfolios presented by Sarah G. Vinci
This workshop will offer an introduction to applying for artists grants, submitting portfolios for on line zines, and portfolio reviews. The session will cover artist statements, resumes, and preparing the necessary files for submission. Samples of successful packets, and a list of organizations and url’s to get you started will also be covered.

Photogram - Painting with Light presented by Victoria Sanchez
A hands on darkroom workshop. Photograms are images made without camera or film. In the darkroom we will place “found” objects such as leaves, flowers, tissue and fabric over light sensitive photographic paper. Using the enlarger as a light source, solid items will appear white against a black background, while translucent objects will appear as shades of gray.

Fine art photographic exhibitions and books are increasing project or series oriented. Attend this interactive workshop to help learn the essence of developing a photographic series that will further propel your creative career.
